Barrier-bred minipigs
, | Barrier-bred Göttingen minipigs are produced in two full-barrier SPF facilities securing their microbiological quality. The colonies are health monitored twice a year, according to FELASA recommendations.
Barrier-bred Göttingen minipigs have a unique health status, tested for a wide range of pathogens, and are genetically and microbiologically defined, making this animal a reliable model for pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, experimental surgery, clinical research and fundamental science. An extensive amount of published background data is available, and we are able to support you with scientific advice and assistance.
Environmental conditions.
At the full-barrier breeding facility for the Göttingen minipig™ in Dalmose, temperature and relative humidity are kept stable with a terrestrial multichannel system, which buffers the inspired air temperature and humidity.
, | The temperature in the stables varies from 18 to 28 Centigrades, depending on age and life cycle of the minipigs, and the relative humidity is 50-70%.
New-born animals are given additional floor heating, while older animals are housed in pens with partial grid floors.
The ventilation rate is 7-20 air changes per hour and the light-dark cycle is 12 hours.

Additional environmental factors are feeding regimen and socialization. Ad libitum feeding tends to cause obesity and variety in body weight within groups, while restricted feeding results in a more homogenous population, without the disadvantages of obesity. Although restricted feeding involves limited food intake, it is not equivalent to malnutrition. , ,
|
, | The minipigs are fed restrictedly twice a day, with an expanded low-calorie certified diet. The levels for crude protein, crude oil, crude fiber and ash of this diet are 13.9%, 2.4%, 11.6% and 5.7% respectively, while the energy level is 10.0 MJ/kg. Since the diet is a fixed formula diet, the actual analysis may vary. ,Pigs older than 7 months are only fed once a day.
